Inspiration & Wellness Newsletter

Focus on the Positive
October 2008

What’s the good news? The 2008/2009 financial market collapse has a created a global consciousness of fear and scarcity. How can you stay calm and hopeful when you hear the media's message of gloom and doom? I've always wished there were a "Good News" network. We could be inspired by reports of people overcoming obstacles, achieving their dreams and giving to others. So much is possible when we stay inspired and believe in our potential. We see solutions to our challenges.

Yes, what's happening in the markets and our businesses is real, and change is occurring. It's important not be swayed by the tide of fear. Panic spreads when we react to others fears. We lose touch with the good that anchors our own lives.

So, what's your Good News? Come on, there must be at least one thing you can think of that went well today. The good news is that you're alive, breathing and reading this newsletter. I bet you have friends and family you care about. Maybe it's a beautiful day, and the leaves are changing. You may have had a great interaction with a family member, friend or co-worker and deepened your connection. Take stock of the good in your life.

Here are some tips to reset and take comfort in the good things in life:

Take Care of Yourself - Having a clean diet, regular exercise, 7-9 hours of sleep and boundaries around your self-care time will help you feel energized and optimistic. Through appropriately challenging exercise you integrate Body, Mind and Spirit which clears the mind and opens the door to new ideas and inspiration. You always benefit when you take care of yourself.

Connect With Spirit - Turn off the news, stop your mental chatter for five minutes and get quiet. See what your Higher Self/Spirit has to say. Try a mediation CD. You might be surprised what comes to you if you allow space for quietness.

Have Fun - Lighten up! Find ways to laugh and be playful with those around you. Put a smile on someone's face and share a few giggles.

Connect With Others - Have lunch with a friend or take a walk with a neighbor. Be an especially empathetic listener. Offer your help on a project, even if you're busy. Surprise someone with an act of unexpected kindness.

Surround Yourself with Like-Minded Friends - Avoid cynics and complainers that leave you feeling drained. Reach out to people who share your hopefulness and have enthusiasm and want to learn, grow and contribute.

Be Grateful - Notice and appreciate the goodness surrounding you: a comfortable place to live, friends and family you can count on, the beauty outside, your good health. Make a point of sharing things you are grateful for with others.

What's the Good News? - Pick three things in your professional and personal life that are going well. Notice how you shift your mood to a more positive state. Try it every day!

Food for thought:

  • In which of your life circumstances would you like to broadcast more Good News?
  • Which people in your life are draining? Who leaves you feeling energized and hopeful?
